01The housing stock
HX1–HX7+
Halifax and the Calder Valley are almost entirely stone: dense pre-1919 terraces climbing the valley sides, weavers’ cottages with their long upper windows, substantial Victorian villas around Savile Park and Skircoat Green, and mill conversions along the canal through Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge. Level ground is rare; most houses negotiate a slope.

The valley does the work here: retained ground behind and beneath houses, cellars cut into the hill taking water from above, and hillside exposure driving rain at solid stone walls. Add historic cement pointing that traps moisture in stone built to breathe, and valley-bottom streets with a flood history your conveyancer’s searches must confirm.
03Which survey level — honestly
Level 2 vs 3+
Most of the stock is pre-1919, solid-walled and on a slope — Level 3 territory as the rule rather than the exception. Do hillside properties in Halifax need a special survey?
They need a surveyor who reads slopes properly. Retaining walls, split levels, cellars cut into the hill and water finding its way downhill all change how damp and movement present — which is why so much Calder Valley stock justifies the deeper Level 3 inspection.
